Aruba’s burst of tropical colour
Bougainvillea brings brilliant colour to gardens, streets and resorts across Aruba. Its long flowering display, tolerance of heat and preference for strong sunshine make it especially well suited to the island. At Villa Nirvana, it softens walls and garden edges while adding vivid colour around the outdoor living areas.
The flowers are not what they seem
The colourful parts most people call flowers are actually modified leaves known as bracts. The plant’s true flowers are the small, usually white blossoms in their centre. The bright bracts help make those tiny flowers more visible to pollinators.
Why Bougainvillea thrives in Aruba
Bougainvillea performs best with plenty of direct sun. Once established, it can tolerate dry periods and generally flowers more freely when it is not overwatered. Good drainage is important: the plant prefers its roots not to remain wet.
Its stems can grow as a shrub, be trained along a wall or climb through support structures. The stems may carry sharp thorns, so the plant is best admired without touching it.
Did you know?
The genus was named after the French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville. Although the plant is now closely associated with Caribbean landscapes, its origins are in South America.
