The silver landmark of Villa Nirvana
The Bismarck Palm is one of the easiest trees to recognise from anywhere in the garden. Its broad, almost metallic leaves form a sculptural crown above the terracotta roof. From the air, the cool silver-blue colour contrasts beautifully with the surrounding green palms and the turquoise pool.
A palm from Madagascar
Bismarckia nobilis originates in Madagascar. It is valued in tropical landscapes for its unusual colour, bold form and ability to become a dramatic standalone specimen. A mature palm can develop leaves around four feet wide and eventually reach an impressive height.
Why it suits a dry tropical garden
Once established, the Bismarck Palm is highly drought tolerant and can cope with some salt spray. It prefers an open, sunny position where its crown has room to spread. Those qualities make it a striking choice for Aruba’s warm climate, although its large size means it needs generous space.
Did you know?
Bismarck Palms have separate male and female trees. The foliage can vary from olive green to the much more distinctive silver-green form seen at Villa Nirvana.
