A living sculpture
The tall cactus near the outdoor bar creates a vertical silhouette among lower palms and flowering Bougainvillea. Multiple upright stems rise like columns, making it one of the most distinctive shapes in the dry side of the garden.
Built for drought
A cactus stores water inside thick green stems. Its ribs can expand after rain and contract as stored moisture is used. The outer skin carries out photosynthesis, while spines replace ordinary leaves and reduce water loss.
Why it thrives in Aruba
Columnar cacti need excellent drainage and abundant light. Aruba’s warmth, sunshine and long dry periods suit this growth strategy well. Too much persistent moisture around the roots can be more damaging than drought.
Look, but do not touch
The cactus is protected by sharp spines. Enjoy its form from the path and keep children from climbing or reaching into the border.
Why the label stays general
Several columnar cactus species have similar ribbed stems. A close inspection of flowers, fruit, spine arrangement and new growth is needed for a reliable species identification, so this page deliberately uses a descriptive common name.
